Le " LIVRE de CHASSE " is a book of medieval hunting composed between 1387 and 1389 by Gaston Fébus (or Phoebus), Count of Foix and Viscount of Béarn, also known as Gaston III Phoebus, and dedicated to Philippe the Bold, Duke of Burgundy .
___________________

The Hunting Book was written, or more exactly dictated to a copyist, from 1387 to 1389 by GASTON III PHOEBUS, Count of Foix .

This man with a complex personality and a hectic life, whom the historian Jean Froissart evokes in his famous " Chronicles " was, like all the lords of the Middle Ages, a great hunter and a great amateur of works of hunting and falconry . 
The work that he composed with great care at the age of fifty-seven was, until the end of the sixteenth century, the breviary of all the followers of the art of hunting or cynegetic art .

Indeed, few books intended for teaching benefit from a richness of illustration comparable to that of the Bibles of that time .

The success of this work was amplified by the beginnings of printing, and in the 18th century, the naturalist Buffon still used it . 
The text is written in excellent French punctuated with some " Norman-Picard " characters, whereas the mother tongue of the Count of Foix was the langue d'oc, spoken at the end of the 14th century in the county of Foix ( FR ) .

The Book consists of a prologue and an epilogue framing seven chapters, the first two of which, "On the nature of beasts" and "On the nature of dogs", are an embryo of descriptive natural history. 

This personal and original treatise is intended as a 'salvation enterprise' that finds its own justification within itself. Indeed, in the medieval world, religion is omnipresent and, with it, the idea of sin and the threat of damnation.

The Hunting Book does not escape this rule. For GASTON PHOEBUS, hunting is a redemptive exercise based on a double postulate:

- " imagination is lord and master of all good and evil works ",

- ahunting, he will have lived better and lived longer. He reviews all aspects of medieval hunting, animals to hunt, dogs, pages, jacks and huntsmen, traps . .

The word calligraphy comes from the Greek words 'Kallo 'beauty and 'Graphein'       

 writing, it is therefore the art of beautiful writing. Over the centuries, many styles of writing will bloom, evolving over time.
In the Middle Ages, two styles will mark their time:
- the writing 'Caroline 'implemented by 'Alcuin of York' Abbot of Saint Martin de Tours in the 8th century, following the decisions of CHARLEMAGNE to standardize writing within his empire .

- And later the "Gothic" which will explode between the 13th and 15th centuries, used mainly in luxury editions. Finally the arrival of printing requiring smaller-sized type will make them both disappear!

Some civilizations, nowadays, have preserved this art of artistic writing (calligraphy), for example:

- Japan, the Arab World, China, the Israelite world (for its sacred texts) . . .

THE PAINTERS ILLUSTRATORS
Master of the Adelphs and 'the school of Bedford trend', genius artists . . .  ___________________

 One can confidently attribute to the 'master of the Adelphes', the best of the artists from the 'Bedford trend' working in the Livre de Chasse, the paintings from the folio ff. 13, 50, 51v and 54  ".

This artist is characterized by an undulating drawing, while being extremely precise and analytical. Its palette offers refined tones, but with a certain coldness.

His masterpiece in the "French says 616" is incontestably the painting of "folio 54", showing GASTON PHOEBUS teaching his servants at the "corner and booing" (sounding the horn, shouting).

The artist completed detailing the damask patterns, of infinite delicacy, of the dress of the Count of Foix, as well as the 'jowled' faces of his servants.

Another achievement of the artist is, for example, the griffin dog of 'folio 50' of which he very meticulously rendered the curly coat, among so many other masterpieces .
