City of ESPALION( France - Aveyron ) -

village of the valley of LOT - The city of Espalion was born from exchanges between the valley and the mountain, is especially from the safety offered by its majestic bridge to cross the Lot .

Very early a Roman road, undoubtedly succeeding an older route, crossed the river. Although secondary, it crossed the Lot at Saint-Côme-d'Olt by a ford near the location of the Gothic bridge . ESPALION was located on a section of this road that connected Bordeaux ( via Cahors ) and Toulouse, to Lyon, capital of the Gauls .

More precisely the road between Segodunum, Rodez capital of the country of the Rutènes, and Anderitum ( currently Javols ) capital of the country of the Gabales .
The city was from the Age to the Revolution dominated by the basalt castle of the lords of Calmont d'Olt, of which the ruins remain in the south . No doubt they were descended from a local chief set up by Charlemagne . . .

In the heart of Aveyron, in the upper valley of the Lot, stands the village of ESTAING, classified among the most beautiful villages of France . His fate is intimately linked to his castle, a seigniorial residence of the Counts of Estaing for nearly eight centuries (in particular several admirals of the royal fleet of France) . Its shale stones with grey-blue reflections give the alleys a timeless medieval atmosphere.

Middle Ages (XIII th and XIV th centuries)

Since the Middle Ages, ESTAING was a major stage on the way to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostella, via its Gothic bridge that spans the Lot . The d'Estaing family distinguished itself in history: one of its members saved the life of King Philippe-Auguste at Bouvines, obtaining the privilege of adding the fleurs-de-lis to the village arms .

ESTAING - village of the valley of LOT

Saint Fleuret, bishop of Clermont, died here in the 5th century AD, and his relics attracted pilgrims for a long time . The castle, remodeled over the centuries, was classified as a Historic Monument in 1945. The schist houses and the lauze roofs are arranged around the dungeon, creating a harmonious picture. The village still retains mansions, witnesses of its past prosperity . Its narrow streets, lined with ancient facades, tell a story where faith, nobility and tradition mingle. The Lot valley, green and peaceful, frames this centuries-old village with its natural setting.

Today, ESTAING seduces both pilgrims and travelers in search of authenticity . Its architectural and spiritual heritage makes it an essential stop in Occitania. Each stone sings the memory of the centuries and the men who shaped it .

ESTAING will always remain a medieval jewel, suitable for making History speak and sing its legends . Let’s specify that the grandfather of the infamous 'Giscard' had acquired the seigniorial title of the 'd' Estaing' family, which became vacquant for lack of viable successors . Owner of the castle by purchase from the municipality, Giscard attached his surname to that of this centuries-old family; the inhabitants questioned throughout the streets did not show any sympathy for the 'maneuvre'; as of today, the 'Giscards' no longer own the castle .

Return to CONQUES and departure towards LIVINHAC heading west . . .

_______________________

We have returned to CONQUES where we had finished our session on this beautiful CHEMIN du PUY ( VIA PODIENSIS ) . . .

Our goal is to continue the Path, towards LIVINHAC, village overlooking the LOT formerly known as, Livinhac the high . .

The PELERIN reception in CONQUES is like the previous year perfect and warm; the village is always beautiful, we enjoy its beauty; after a serene night, we get up early, and after a hearty breakfast, we walk down the cobblestone streets in the morning, let’s cross the bridge over the river and attack this first hilly stage which will lead us to LIVINHAC .

Located in a meander of the Lot valley, Livinhac-le-Haut has long lived with the river; the Lot has always been an important means of communication.
On this watercourse, the barge used to go up, towards the upstream, the salt for preserving meat and fish and the wines of Figeac;
and were going down the oak barrels, the boxwood taps, the meats and fish until FIGEAC and beyond . .
