JOYEUSE - Historic village of the SOUTH ARDECHE -

_______________

Nestled in the heart of the Beaume valley, in the south of the Ardèche, JOYEUSE is a city of character whose alleys bear witness to a rich past several centuries .
His name is associated with the famous sword of CHARLEMAGNE called "Joyeuse". According to local tradition, the emperor lost this weapon during a hunt in the year 802 before a loyal soldier found it. This legend remains today one of the founding stories of the city.

JOYEUSE - Historic village of the SOUTH ARDECHE ( France )

_______________
XII th in the 15th century .

In the Middle Ages, JOYEUSE became an important stronghold of the Cévennes ardéchoises. From the 12th century, it was linked to the powerful House of JOYEUSE, one of the great noble families of the Kingdom of France. In 1235, the city obtained a charter of franchises that promoted its economic and administrative development.
Around 1381, the city was built with ramparts of which several vestiges are still visible today. The vaulted passages, locally called "goulajous", the old gates and the narrow alleys recall the defensive organization of this resolutely medieval city.

The 16th century marks the golden age of JOYEUSE . The seigneurial family then reached the highest spheres of power; Anne de Joyeuse, "favorite" of King Henry III, became first duke of JOYEUSE in 1581. This period of prosperity also saw the reconstruction of the castle, in the Renaissance style, from which remarkable architectural elements still survive today.

Over the centuries, the castle has had various uses: stately home, prison, garrison, school and then town hall. Today restored, it is one of the main witnesses of local history.

The heritage of JOYEUSE is not limited to its castle. The church of Saint-Pierre, the private mansions, the ancient fountains and the stone houses make up a homogeneous architectural ensemble. Each detour invites the discovery of a carved detail, an old facade or a shaded plot and doors.

Labeled " Ville et Métiers d'Art ", JOYEUSE also perpetuates the artisanal tradition that has contributed to its reputation. It remains a dynamic cultural center where history blends harmoniously with contemporary life.

JOYFUL, the epic of the sword of CHARLEMAGNE

________________________

The sword of Charlemagne called Joyeuse is considered to be the legendary sword of Charlemagne as it is cited in the Chanson de Roland, a famous medieval text popularized for centuries by " trouvères " et " troubadours ", often nomadic artists expressing themselves in the seigneurial courts.

Over time, it has become a sword used during the coronation of the kings of France from the twelfth or thirteenth centuries, called "sword of CHARLEMAGNE". It is one of the oldest "regalia" (symbolic objects legitimizing a sovereign) of the kingdom of France; it is currently visible in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

The Second World War deeply marks his existence. In 1942, his father, arrested during anti-Semitic persecutions, was deported to the Auschwitz camp where he died. This event will leave in the young Jean a lasting injury which will later inspire some of his most famous songs, including "Nuit" and "Brouillard".

At the end of the war, forced to help his family, he interrupted his studies and worked in a chemistry laboratory. At the same time, he is passionate about theater, poetry and music. In the early 1950s, he frequented cabarets on the left bank of Paris and began to compose his first songs.

In 1956, he set to music the poem Les Yeux d'Elsa by Louis Aragon, a poet of whom he became one of the most fervent interpreters. This work brings him a first recognition in the artistic community.
